How it works · Importing
Bring your AI history with you.
You've already had thousands of conversations with ChatGPT or Claude. You've already explained yourself a hundred times. Continio can read all of that, and start knowing you from the first chat.
How to export from ChatGPT
- Open ChatGPT and go to Settings → Data controls
- Click Export data
- You'll get an email with a download link, usually within a few minutes
- Download the archive and find the file called
conversations.json - Upload that file to Continio via Settings → Import history
How to export from Claude
- Open Claude.ai and go to Settings → Privacy
- Click Export data
- Download the archive and find the conversations export file
- Upload it to Continio via Settings → Import history
What happens after you upload
Your chats land in Continio. They appear in the sidebar in seconds and you can start chatting with Continio straight away.
Continio reads through what you imported so it can find things later when you ask. While this is happening you won't notice anything, nothing slows down. For very large imports (50,000+ messages) it can take a while longer.
Continio works through your messages newest first, picking up the things worth remembering. The people in your life. The projects you've been building. The decisions you've made. Patterns in how you work. These start showing up in My Context as it finds them. Most recent stuff lands first, so you'll feel the difference quickly.
Pro and above only for memory pickup
Basic and trial users get the first two parts. Your history is stored and searchable. Continio can find things in it when you ask.
Picking up memories from your history is a Pro feature. You can upgrade any time and start the process via Settings → Import & export, on any history you've already uploaded.
Basic users do get live memory pickup from ongoing chats with Continio. Up to 50 memories. The Pro requirement is specifically for working through your historical ChatGPT or Claude data.
You can see what's running in Settings → Past imports. "Preparing conversations" means the second part is happening. "Finding memories" means the third part is. "Done" means all three are complete.
How memory pickup actually works
Continio reads each of your past messages and asks: does this contain something durable and true about this person? It's looking for relationships, health context, projects you were building, decisions you made, preferences you stated, patterns in how you work.
Memory dates reflect when things were actually said, not when you imported them. If you mentioned two years ago that you were building a particular project, that memory is dated accordingly. This matters because it lets Continio tell the difference between old context and current context. Things that were true then but probably aren't now get auto-archived so they don't affect your replies.
Because pickup runs newest first, your current context lands first.
Older context gets archived after pickup
When pickup finishes, Continio automatically archives anything from more than 12 months before your import date. These memories are kept (you can see them in My Context under Archived) but they don't affect your conversations.
You can restore any archived memory if it's still relevant. You can also run this cleanup yourself from Settings → My Context → Archive old.
You don't have to babysit it
Just leave it running. Upload your file, confirm it's started, and get on with using Continio. You don't need to watch a progress bar.
For large imports, pickup runs at up to 10,000 messages a day and continues across days if needed. Conversations appear in your history as they're processed. Memories appear in My Context as they're found.
If something goes wrong
Failed or stuck imports show up in Settings → Past imports with an error message. You can delete a failed one (which rolls back any imported data) and try again.
If something has been stuck for more than 10 minutes in processing, it'll be flagged automatically. If you're seeing the same problem repeatedly, email hello@continio.app with the job ID from the Past imports panel.
